Can’t Stomach Cancer
Today, it takes true optimism to live a successful life. When approached with a conflict, one needs a positive mindset in order to transform it into an opportunity. It also takes unconditional mental strength to still focus on the needs of others during a time of personal pain and suffering. One smile can alleviate some of the most excruciating physical and mental pains that people feel. For Debbie Zelman, a successful Floridian and mother of three, these factors have become second nature.
Three years ago, Zelman was a 40-year-old, ambitious attorney with her own firm, family, and numerous achievements. Suddenly, when some sporadic stomach pains evolved into an incurable stage IV stomach cancer, Zelman’s life changed drastically. In the blink of an eye, her health was jeopardized, her chances for survival were threatened, and her life would never be the same. After learning that she potentially had less than six months to live, Zelman closed her practice and reexamined her life.
While she could have easily turned to depression, Debbie Zelman chose to look forward. Rather than sulking in her sickness, she immediately educated herself about the origins of stomach cancer and the effects it has on families. With a dream to find better treatments for this disease, Zelman spearheaded a progressive organization called Can’t Stomach Cancer. Through this association, Zelman has committed herself to spreading awareness and information about stomach cancer across the globe. Can’t Stomach Cancer is rapidly being acknowledged around the world, and because of this mother and leader, it will continue to thrive and impact the lives of all cancer patients and their families. In less than one year, this woman has reached new heights by pursuing her dream.
Since then, Debbie Zelman has continued to shine through life while overcoming over 50 rounds of chemotherapy. With a contagious optimistic attitude, she discovered her fight for survival while doctors continue to search for cures. Despite the frequent suffering she endures, Zelman is a living example of true strength. Today, she makes jeopardizing stomach cancer look beautiful.
Perhaps it takes more than strong medication to overcome pain. Debbie Zelman faced this life challenge and created an incredible foundation as a result. Her unwavering positive strength has enabled her to overcome a fatal sickness. Along with her strength, Zelman’s altruism and motivation has inspired hundreds who deal with personal pain. Her smile will continue to spread light to those people during the darkest of times.

Debbie is a truly a remarkable woman. She has inspired and educated many people about gastric cancer. My niece is another woman much like Debbie who is battling gastric and esophageal cancer. She is determined, ispirational and someone who the world needs. Melissa is currently volunteering at Can't Stomach Cancer and is working with Debbie to irradicate the world of this horrible disease. Stomach cancer took my dad 16 years ago swiftly and mercilessly. It is an underserved cause and Debbie Zelman along with those who work with her are trying to change that. I am an eight year colon cancer survivor.. I understand what it is like to hear those words, "You have Cancer." Anyone or anything that can take the sting away and give positivity and hope is truly a thing of beauty. God bless you Debbie. Keep fighting!
